With a nationwide chemical distribution network, our customer manages thousands of orders every month while coordinating both its own fleet and multiple external carriers.
As operations expanded, manual transport planning required significant dispatcher intervention, while delivery information remained fragmented across different teams.
Smartlog Transportation Management (STM) - Auto Planning with AI (SARP) was implemented to digitize the transportation workflow, automate planning and strengthen delivery control across the network.
ABOUT OUR CUSTOMER
Our customer is a chemical and industrial raw-material distributor, serving businesses across food and beverage, FMCG, dairy, coatings, personal care and other manufacturing sectors.
Its transportation network handles more than 3,200 orders and 1,300 trips per month, with approximately 140 vehicles and 10 carriers operating on STM.
The combination of company-owned vehicles and outsourced transport capacity creates a complex coordination environment across orders, warehouses, vehicles and carriers.
OPERATING CONTEXT
Before STM, orders were created in SAP, while the subsequent transportation processes still relied heavily on manual workflows.
Information moved across customer service, warehouse operations, dispatch, carriers, delivery staff, documentation and accounting. Transport planning, delivery monitoring and document management were not connected through a single transportation platform.
Automatic planning also required substantial manual adjustment before dispatchers could convert proposed plans into actual trips.
KEY CHALLENGES
Transport planning required significant manual effort
Automatic trip allocation for contracted vehicles reached only around 19–50%, requiring dispatchers to review and adjust a large portion of the proposed plans.
Limited visibility from order to delivery
Transportation data moved across multiple teams without a centralized platform connecting order, trip and delivery-document information.
Transport data required greater standardization
Differences between GPS and operational reporting, together with inconsistencies in volume conversion for freight settlement, increased reconciliation effort and affected reporting consistency.
SMARTLOG’S APPROACH
Smartlog implemented STM as the centralized transportation management platform, then strengthened planning capabilities through Auto Planning.
Connecting the transportation workflow
STM brings order handling, transport planning, trip creation, delivery monitoring and document management together on one platform.
This allows multiple teams to coordinate from a consistent source of transportation data.
Automating planning with Auto Planning (SARP)
Auto Planning (SARP) uses optimization algorithms to recommend how orders, vehicles and trips should be allocated.
The planning engine was further enhanced through SVRP to increase automatic allocation and reduce the amount of manual intervention required from dispatchers.
Centralizing delivery monitoring
STM provides a unified view of trip status and delivery progress while creating more consistent data for transport reporting and freight reconciliation.
RESULTS
Following the Auto Planning (SARP) enhancement, the automatic trip-allocation rate for contracted vehicles in the South increased from approximately 19–50% to around 80%.
Transport planning time was reduced from approximately 2 hours to around 30 minutes, significantly reducing manual planning effort.
Across nationwide operations, the system records:
99.6% on-time performance by order line
99.2% on-time performance by trip
More than 1,300 trips per month
Approximately 140 vehicles operating on STM
These results demonstrate how planning automation can help a growing transport network maintain stronger operational control and service performance.
BUSINESS VALUE
Smartlog STM and Auto Planning (SARP) help the business move from dispatcher-dependent planning toward a more data-driven, algorithm-supported operating model.
Automated planning reduces processing time, while STM connects information from order creation through delivery execution.
For chemical distributors operating across multiple warehouses, vehicles and carriers, this provides a stronger foundation to scale transportation operations while maintaining control and delivery performance.
